Corporate Quitter #5

How A Broke College Dropout Makes $1.2 Million As A Podcaster 🤩

Hey y’all,

It’s Gabby from Corporate Quitter 👋

Sooooo, I’m back in Austin, TX… again for 3-weeks 🤭

I’m currently sitting in one of my favorite coffee shops, feeling extremely grateful that I no longer have to ask a boss for permission to do just about anything, including travel.

It took me 5 years to have the courage to quit corporate, and another 2.5 years to build up recurring revenue, understand marketing/content creation, and avoid time and money sucks.

But it doesn’t have to take you as long as it did for me.

Don’t believe the lie that you have time. You don’t.

The longer you wait to work on your exit strategy, the longer and harder it’ll be for you to make something of your life.

🚨 Today is the last day to take advantage of the Quitter Program deal where you get 50% off + an additional 1:1 strategy or coaching session with me (which can be used immediately).

If you’re unsure if the program is a good fit OR you want to discuss alternatives (like 1:1 work), book a Quitter Call

How A Broke College Dropout Makes $1.2 Million As A Podcaster 🤩

🔥 Opportunity: Podcasting

🔎 Case Study: Diary Of A CEO, $1.2 Million Per Year

Though Steven Bartlett is an exceptional case, he started like most of us - a broke college dropout with parents working regular jobs.

No trust fund. No rich uncle. No shortcuts or back doors.

Though his initial success came from building Social Chain early in adulthood, he didn’t stop there and has been building additional businesses, one of which is Diary Of A CEO (now the UK’s #1 podcast).

If you’re curious how Steven grew his show, overcame a lack of consistency, and has now monetized it where it brings in a whopping $1.2 million per year, I’d highly recommend you watch the below video:

Why Podcasting as a Business?

I might be biased because I’m a podcaster myself - but podcasting has hands down been the most life-changing project I’ve ever worked on.

It’s how I was able to build an audience and distinguish myself in a world filled with noise (anyone can create a social media page, but not everyone can or will create a podcast).

Did you know that to be in the top 1% of podcasts, you only have to have released 21 episodes?

There are currently 3 million published podcasts in the world, which means that only 30,000 of them have made it past 20 episodes until calling it quits.

So WHY podcasting?

1️⃣ It’s a REALLY fun way to naturally grow your network

As they say, your network is your net worth, and what better way to expand it than by having a fun conversation? Beats the hell out of going to boring networking events and conferences.

Also, a lot of my close friendships started because of the podcast which is an amazing bonus 💜

2️⃣ Easily gets you in front of ‘big players’ and untouchables

What if you could have a conversation with your favorite athlete? That creator you ADORE? Or that millionaire whose books you’ve read a zillion times? With a podcast, it’s possible.

Everyone loves to talk to themselves regardless of their income or status. By being a curious individual and asking really good questions that create a fun environment, you can talk to some of the worlds greatest (and possibly become friends with them).

3️⃣ Find your voice & become more expressed

As someone who’s felt stifled for most of my adult life, it’s been SO personally transformative to uncover my true self, and at rapid speed because of the podcast.

The more you talk and connect with like-minded individuals, the more pieces of yourself you unlock.

4️⃣ Increased credibility

As I said prior, anyone and everyone can post on social, but not everyone can or has a podcast, and journalists know this. The reason why I’ve had SO much media attention (thus attaining more followers and attention for brand deals + clients) is solely because of having a podcast.

I also one day want to publish a book, and was told by a reputable publisher that having a podcast is 10x more appealing when editors look for new authors to take on. This goes for TEDx speakers too.

⚙️ COOL TOOLS

Podcasting seems daunting, but I can assure you, it’s not as complex as you’d think thanks to AI tools. Here are some favorites:

Riverside.fm: Easily record podcasts and videos in studio quality over a browser. Use their AI tool called ‘Magic Clips’ to generate short social media clips.

Otter.ai: Otter is an AI-powered tool that functions like a meeting assistant that records audio, writes notes, and generates summaries. This is a great add-on App to utilize if you’re recording over Zoom.

Auphonic: Use AI to make your audio quality better

ContentShake: Helps you brainstorm, write, and optimize your copy to increase episode clickability.

Descript: Not an audio editor? No problem! AI will transcribe your episodes and allow you to edit the audio through text. Descript will also use AI to generate show notes and brainstorm social media posts.

🤖 CHATGPT

I’ve talked to hundreds of you about podcasting, and though a lot of you have questions about the actual backend, a lot of you are stumped with coming up with ideas.

I know how overwhelming it can be when first starting your show, but with the help of ChatGPT, you can streamline most of your brain power while keeping it relevant, fun, and binge-worthy.

Prompts of the Week:

Example Prompt 1
Can you suggest some podcast episode ideas that focus on [topic]?

Example Prompt 2
What are some common misconceptions in [field/topic] that I could address in my podcast?

Example Prompt 3
Can you help me come up with a list of thought-provoking interview questions to ask a guest who specializes in [topic]?

️ PODCAST

I’ve been chatting with SO many Quitters these past few weeks because of the Quitter Program and also because of this viral video I posted, and there’s ONE THING that is keeping most of y’all trapped:

Indecisiveness (queue dramatic music)

Sure, we want to believe we're just gathering all the facts, taking due time, and weighing in on all our options.

But it's bullshit.

It's what we tell ourselves to avoid making a tough choice.

It's the invisible barrier standing between "you today" and the "better you" you're dreaming about when you’re driving home from the job that makes you feel dead inside.

Here's the clincher; this whole indecisiveness thing, it's a comfortable trap.

You don't move forward, but hey, you don't move backward either, right? Wrong.

Every time you delay a decision, you're choosing the status quo.

You’re choosing to stay put, to let life happen rather than make it happen.

Instead of making progress, you’re just pressing pause - on your dreams, your goals, every f*cking thing that matters.

Check out this week’s episode to learn more about how to get past indecisiveness and finally do the damn thing.

🤳 CREATOR CORNER

Podcasting has been hands down one of the most life-changing things I have done for myself both personally and professionally... and it's easier and cheaper than you'd think.

Here’s how I started my podcast for free:

COVER ART

Canva is an excellent graphic design tool. It uses drag-and-drop features and has a ton of free templates which makes designing anything a breeze.

FINDING A GUEST

Matchmaker.fm is a completely free tool that will help you find guests or shows to be on.

BOOK THEM

Calendly is an amazing, automated tool that helps guests easily book time on your calendar without wasting time going back and forth over email and trying to figure out time zones.

RECORD

Zoom is completely free for users who conduct 1:1 meetings, and up to 40 minutes free for more than 2 users. Use a pair of headphones to record your episode!

AUDIO EDITING

Audacity is a free audio editing tool that is available for both Mac and Windows. There are a ton of YouTube videos that will teach you how to do this.

DISTRIBUTION

RedCircle is the hosting platform I use to upload my audio and send it off to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, etc. It's super user-friendly and makes managing your show quick and easy!

SHARE

Linktree is a great free alternative instead of having a website for your show. You can attach as many links as you want, including your contact information, episode links, social handles, and even business freebies.
