🥲 A Global Recession Is Coming: Why This Is A GOOD Thing
🧱 How To Prepare: Position Yourself For Net Positives
👀 Find Your Passion Amidst A Recession: Do THIS!
🎧 Dream Jobs DON’T Exist: What To Look For Instead
Recession Opportunities
Though not confirmed, it looks like the US is heading towards a recession 🥲
I know, it’s not what we all want to hear, especially considering it feels like we’ve all been through the f*cking wringer these past few years and have been gaslighted the entire time…
But recessions are a normal, cyclical part of the economy and come to make corrections.
I DO see this “correction” as something that goes beyond economics though, and that to me is exciting (like the crumbling facade of out-of-touch celebrities and our obsession with material goods)
The other reason why I’m excited about this as a creator, freelancer, and influencer is because of the opportunity.
Yes, you read that right.
If you look at a recession from a typical investing standpoint, experts always advise you to buy low (recession) and sell high (when the economy is GREAT).
The same goes for business.
“Buying into” your dream during a recession might sound counterintuitive, but this is the time when the oversaturated market gets to be thinned out.
Those who don’t *truly* have the chutzpah to stay and play will leave, which makes space for you to either start or continue shining brighter.
Not to mention, if other businesses are hurting, you may benefit from getting discounted services, cheaper subscriptions, and more favorable negotiations.
That said, here are some reminders and actions for you to take so you can prepare and make the most of this unsexy opportunity 👇
RECESSION REMINDERS
⭐️ A job doesn't guarantee security
⭐️ Diversifying your streams of income can be a saving grace
⭐️ Asking for help is not a sign of weakness
⭐️ Financial literacy is HARD, but make it a priority
⭐️ Recessions are great opportunities for weak competitors to fall away
Prepare For Net Positives
Life is gonna life regardless, but preparation and planting seeds can make all the difference.
Here’s how you can prepare for ‘net positives’ as either an employee or entrepreneur👇
FOR CREATORS & SMALL BUSINESSES
1️⃣ Focus on cash flow + diversify revenue streams
Sales matter, but cash is king.
Having more than one way to bring in revenue can make a huge difference, and regardless of what happens economically, everyone continues to have problems that need to be solved.
So, how can you solve theirs?
This is an opportunity for you to show up differently and share something you haven’t or sell something you’re skilled at even if it’s not your main niche or topic.
2️⃣ Scale back or double down - Just. don’t. stop.
Remember, in order for you to benefit from a recession, you need to last through it and keep showing up.
Do what you need to do to scale back your energy and money spent, or look for ways to run more efficiently so you can maintain your cadence.
Above all, your mental health and safety are of utmost importance.
3️⃣ Look for opportunity
As I mentioned above, recessions have always created opportunity, you just have to keep your eyes open to it.
And yes, this also goes for opportunities that don’t make you money.
Be open to trying something new to scratch an itch and see where it leads.
I responded to a Craigslist Ad for a podcast guest request in August 2021 and then quit my job 5 months later to pursue podcasting, and here I am today still doing it.
And remember, perseverance and resourcefulness are two of the most valuable qualities during tough economic times.
Recessions can be tough but think of it as a challenge that will lead to growth in the long term.
FOR EMPLOYEES
1️⃣ Upskill + Reskill
Take online courses or attend workshops to learn new skills.
Pro tip: focus on skills that are in demand, such as digital marketing, coding, or data analysis.
We’re also launching 2 new Signature Programs in September - First $10k As A Freelancer (self-paced course) & Build A $10k Brand (1:1 program with me).
Both of these will go Live on September 1st.
Buy within the next 2 weeks to receive a HUGE discount + a special gift!!
2️⃣ Network Actively
Networking may not help in the short term, but you never know who can help or how (and sometimes you WILL benefit in the short term)
Connect with industry professionals through LinkedIn or attend industry events in person or virtually (check out your local Meetup or Luma events page).
Want to do something less cringe? Consider launching a podcast to help connect with unique individuals.
Everyone loves talk about their story, but asking a professional for a virtual coffee chat to pick their brain isn’t nearly as sexy as asking them to be a guest on your show (and no, it doesn’t have to be a massively successful show either).
Check out our blog for quick tips on launching one for $0 or consider some of our more extensive podcasting resources here (scroll down to ‘podcasting resources’ section)
2️⃣ Explore Freelance or Consulting Work
Leverage your expertise to offer services on a freelance or consulting basis.
You can build a portfolio and market yourself through online platforms like Upwork or Fiverr, or start sharing on LinkedIn or in your Instagram Stories (I’ve booked about ~$60k worth of client work through my stories alone the past year).
Consider our new Signature Program First $10k As A Freelancer (self-paced course) to help!
Find Your Passion In A Recession
Many experts would probably advise you to hunker down amidst a recession, but y’all know I ain’t one to play by the rules…
And you shouldn’t either 😈
PLUS, when it alllll works out for you, it’ll make for one helluva story when you write your New York Times Best Selling Book 💁♀️
Here’s how you’re going to find your niche:
THE BODY NEVER LIES
The body never lies (and yes, this applies to like literally everything).
There’s a benefit to practicing silence, but “waiting for your genius idea” isn’t going to make it come quicker.
Practicing and flexing your creative muscles will.
I sometimes still trick myself into thinking I need to take a step back when I’m in overwhelm with ideas OR my idea bucket has dried up, but usually it just means I’m avoiding it.
Give this strategy a go and let me know if it helps:
Here’s an example + me showing you
Use our FREE Niche Navigator to uncover your Niche and find out what profitable niche you can tap into, even if it’s just temporarily to keep things afloat (no shame in this).
